Frequently Asked Questions About Teeth Whitening
Yes, but we’ll modify your treatment plan. Lower concentration whitening gel, reduced treatment duration, and specialized desensitizing products help protect sensitive teeth while still achieving excellent results.
This is an important distinction. Standard teeth whitening (external bleaching) works on natural, vital teeth by penetrating the enamel from the outside. However, when a tooth has had root canal treatment, it may darken from the inside due to internal tissue changes or treatment materials. For these teeth, we perform “internal bleaching” (walking bleach technique), where we place whitening agent inside the tooth chamber and seal it temporarily. This treats discoloration from within the tooth structure. A completely different approach that specifically addresses the unique discoloration that can affect root canal-treated teeth.
Professional whitening is generally recommended only after all permanent teeth have fully erupted. Typically around age 16 or older. Treatment for younger patients requires careful professional supervision.
We recommend scheduling 2–4 weeks before your event. This timeline allows for any temporary sensitivity to resolve and provides flexibility for touch-up treatments if desired.
Professional teeth whitening at Prostho Cosmetic Dentistry is highly effective for most types of discoloration but does have limitations for certain conditions.
Extrinsic stains are those caused by external factors like coffee, tea, red wine, berries, and tobacco. It respond excellently to whitening, often improving by 5-8 shades. Age-related yellowing, which results from natural enamel thinning that reveals the yellowish dentin beneath, also responds very well to professional whitening.
However, some types of discoloration have limited or no response: intrinsic stains from certain antibiotics (particularly tetracycline) may show only modest improvement even with extended treatment; discoloration from developmental conditions affecting enamel formation often requires alternative treatments; white spots from fluorosis or demineralization may actually become more noticeable after surrounding enamel brightens; and teeth with restorations (fillings, crowns, veneers) won't change color with whitening. An important consideration for visible restorations that might no longer match after treatment.
