Why Tooth Extractions Are Sometimes Necessary

NECESSARY extractions CAN HELP YOUR overall health
Tooth extraction has transformed dramatically in recent years.
At Prostho Cosmetic Dentistry, we've eliminated the anxiety and discomfort traditionally associated with tooth removal through our advanced techniques, comprehensive comfort options, and meticulous attention to every detail of your care.

Our approach begins with detailed 3D imaging that allows us to visualize the exact position of the tooth and surrounding structures, creating a precise extraction plan that minimizes tissue disruption.

Using the latest in local anesthesia delivery systems and optional sedation, we ensure your procedure is remarkably comfortable—many patients are surprised by how quick and painless the experience actually is.

Beyond the procedure itself, we focus on optimal healing. Our technique preserves the surrounding bone structure when possible, which maintains facial aesthetics and creates better conditions for future tooth replacement options like dental implants.

We provide comprehensive aftercare instructions and are readily available for any questions during your recovery process. With Prostho Cosmetic Dentistry, tooth extraction isn't something to fear. It's simply the first step toward restored oral health and comfort. Ready to address that problematic tooth? Schedule your consultation today

While our philosophy emphasizes preserving natural teeth whenever possible, extractions become necessary in specific situations: when a tooth is severely damaged beyond repair from trauma or extensive decay, when advanced periodontal disease has destroyed supporting bone, when infection persists despite root canal therapy, or when removing teeth would benefit orthodontic treatment for severely crowded mouths.

Wisdom teeth (third molars) often require extraction when they're impacted, causing pain, or threatening the alignment of other teeth.

During your consultation at Prostho Cosmetic Dentistry, we'll thoroughly evaluate all preservation options before recommending extraction, and explain exactly why removal might be the healthiest long-term solution for your specific situation.

The procedure length will vary depending on the complexity.

You will receive post-op instructions and gauze to manage any initial bleeding.

Mild discomfort, swelling, and limited jaw movement are normal after extractions—this is temporary.

Please call today if you need to schedule. (301) 377− 8306
Day One: Continue biting on the gauze for 30-60 minutes following your procedure. Do not spit, rinse, suck (using a straw), drink carbonated or alcoholic beverages, or smoke for at least 24 hours following your procedure. Passively empty your mouth while needed by standing over the sink and drooling everything out slowly. The goal is to keep blood clots in the socket to prevent bleeding and a painful complication known as dry socket.
Day Two: You will most likely experience one or more of the following symptoms: Minor pain, swelling, bruising, and limitation in opening or closing your mouth, pain in your jaw or ear, sore throat. It is important to listen to your body and to take it easy. No heavy lifting, splitting, sucking, alcohol, or smoking.
Oral Hygiene: Brush gently. A gentle lukewarm saltwater rinse can be used to freshen your mouth. But again, do not spit; just let the fluid passively empty. The corners of your mouth may become cracked and dry so moisturize frequently.
Swelling and Discomfort: Apply cold compresses to affected area at 10-minute intervals for the first 24 hours to minimize swelling. Any swelling that occurs usually begins to go away within 72 hours. Please give us a call if there is no change.
Ibuprofen (Advil®, Motrin®) works well to manage post-operative discomfort. In case of pain, adopt a regular dosing schedule of 400 – 600mg every 6-8 hours for 24 hours. If pain is not controlled with Ibuprofen only, you can combine/stagger Ibuprofen 600mg with 500mg of Acetaminophen (Extra Strength Tylenol®). Please do not use any of the above medications that your physician or pharmacist has advised you not to take. Please follow manufacturer’s instructions and discontinue alcohol consumption while taking these medications.
Bleeding: Some oozing of blood is normal for the first 12-24 hours. Put a hand towel on your pillow as some drooling can occur while you are numb. If you experience excessive bleeding, apply firm pressure with 1-2 folded gauze pads or a damp tea bag on the affected area for about 30-60 minutes and keep your head elevated. Call the office if the bleeding does not subside.
During office hours (8:30am-5:00pm, M-F), please call/text: 301-377-8306
After hours, please call/text Dr. DJ Shin’s cell phone: 857-540-2066
Diet: Drink plenty of fluids. Avoid carbonated and alcoholic beverages. A soft diet will be the easiest (yogurt, milkshakes with no straw, soups, fish, and pasta). Nothing too spicy is also recommended. It is normal to have a little tenderness while chewing and difficulty opening wide.
Stitches: If you have received sutures, avoid playing with them. If non-restorable sutures were placed, a 15-minute post op appointment will be needed to remove the sutures in 7-10 days.
Prescriptions: If you have been prescribed antibiotics, take as directed until they run out, even if the symptoms dissipate. Some antibiotics can interfere with the effectiveness of other medications so let your dentist know of any other medications you may be taking. Take all medications as directed by your dentist.
Please return for a follow-up. Failure to do so may result in complications and Prostho. Endo. Dental Specialists (Shin Prosthodontics, LLC) will not be held liable for conditions or problems that may occur due to your failure to return for follow-up.

A simple extraction is performed on fully erupted, visible teeth that can be removed using elevation and forceps techniques under local anesthesia.

Surgical extractions, which include wisdom tooth removal and extractions of broken or impacted teeth require a small incision into the gum tissue and sometimes removal of overlying bone or sectioning the tooth into smaller pieces.

At Prostho Cosmetic Dentistry, we use advanced imaging to determine which approach is appropriate for your situation and offer multiple sedation options for either procedure type.

Our skilled team has extensive experience with both techniques, ensuring your comfort regardless of extraction complexity. Questions about which type of extraction you might need? Call us for a personalized evaluation.
At Prostho Cosmetic Dentistry, we've revolutionized the tooth extraction experience through our comprehensive comfort protocol.

During the procedure, you'll receive precisely delivered local anesthesia, with optional sedation ranging from nitrous oxide to conscious sedation for those with dental anxiety.

Many patients report feeling only pressure, not pain during their extraction. For post-procedure comfort, we use long-lasting local anesthetics and provide detailed pain management instructions including appropriate medications.

Our minimally invasive techniques result in less tissue trauma, which significantly reduces post-extraction discomfort. We also offer optional cold therapy after surgery to minimize swelling and increase comfort.

Recovery time varies depending on the complexity of your extraction, but most patients follow this general timeline: The initial clot forms within 24 hours, with the most noticeable discomfort typically subsiding after 2-3 days.

Soft tissue healing progresses significantly within 7-10 days, while complete bone healing takes approximately 3-6 months (though this doesn't impact your daily comfort). Our patients often return to work or school within 1-2 days for simple extractions and 3-5 days for surgical or wisdom tooth extractions.

At Prostho Cosmetic Dentistry, we enhance your recovery through meticulous surgical technique, specialized healing materials, and comprehensive aftercare guidance. We also offer accelerated healing options for qualifying patients.

Need to plan around work or school commitments? Contact us to discuss your specific situation and recovery expectations.
After extraction, several replacement options can restore both function and aesthetics: Dental implants offer the most natural-looking, long-lasting solution by replacing both root and crown while preserving jawbone integrity.

Fixed bridges provide a non-removable option that uses adjacent teeth for support without surgery. Partial dentures offer an economical, removable solution ideal for replacing multiple teeth.

The best choice depends on several factors: your oral health status, bone volume at the extraction site, adjacent teeth condition, aesthetic goals, and budget considerations.

At Prostho Cosmetic Dentistry, Dr. Shin specializes in prosthodontics (tooth replacement) and can guide you through these options with detailed visual previews of potential outcomes.

In some cases, we can place an implant immediately following extraction, reducing your overall treatment timeline. Schedule a consultation to explore which replacement option best suits your specific needs and lifestyle.
