Gum Lifts & Contouring
Why Are Gum Lifts & Contouring So Important?
Many people are unaware that their “small teeth” or “gummy smile” can be transformed through gentle gum lifts & contouring rather than extensive dental work. This relatively simple procedure can dramatically improve your smile's appearance by creating ideal tooth proportions and symmetry.
Whether addressing a single tooth with excessive gum coverage or an entire gumline that appears uneven, gum lifts & contouring provides immediate and permanent improvements that enhance your overall facial aesthetics.
As specialists in comprehensive smile design, Dr. DJ Shin and our team approach gum lifts & contouring as both a science and an art form. Using digital smile design technology, we precisely map the ideal gumline architecture for your unique facial features before any treatment begins. This careful planning ensures harmonious proportions between your teeth, gums, and lips that look completely natural.
Our advanced laser technology allows for comfortable, precise gum lifts & contouring with minimal discomfort and rapid healing. Unlike traditional surgical approaches, laser contouring minimizes bleeding, reduces recovery time, and provides immediate results you can see as soon as treatment is complete. Many patients are amazed by how this conservative procedure, often completed in a single visit, can dramatically enhance the appearance of their smile.
For cases requiring more extensive recontouring or crown lengthening, our comprehensive approach ensures that both aesthetic goals and long-term dental health are addressed simultaneously, creating results that are as functional as they are beautiful.
Our gum lifts & contouring procedures are distinguished by Dr. Shin's prosthodontic expertise in comprehensive smile design that considers how your gumline interacts with both your teeth and overall facial aesthetics.
Unlike general practices, we utilize digital smile design technology to create a precise blueprint of your ideal gumline before treatment begins, ensuring perfectly balanced proportions and natural-looking symmetry.
Our advanced laser technology provides gentle, precise recontouring with minimal discomfort and dramatically reduced healing time compared to traditional surgical approaches.
We offer complete coordination with any associated cosmetic procedures, ensuring your gumline enhancement complements veneers, crowns, or other restorative work for comprehensive smile transformation.
Throughout your treatment, our focus on both technical excellence and patient comfort includes options like conscious sedation and our spa-like amenities, transforming what might seem intimidating into a comfortable, rewarding experience with immediate, visible results that enhance your entire facial appearance.

You might benefit from gum lifts & contouring if you notice any of these common concerns: your teeth appear short or square despite being healthy and properly sized; your smile reveals excessive gum tissue (often called a “gummy smile”); your gumline appears uneven or asymmetrical across your teeth; individual teeth have different gum heights creating an irregular appearance; or you're planning cosmetic dental work like veneers and want to optimize your overall smile aesthetics.
During your consultation, Dr. Shin will conduct a comprehensive aesthetic evaluation that considers your unique facial features, lip line when smiling, tooth proportions, and overall gum architecture. Using digital smile design technology, we can show you a visual representation of how gum lifts & contouring might improve your specific smile concerns. Many patients are surprised to discover that what they perceived as “small teeth” are actually normal-sized teeth partially covered by excess gum tissue.
This evaluation helps determine whether gum lifts & contouring alone will achieve your goals or if it should be combined with other cosmetic procedures for optimal results. The ideal gumline should follow a gently scalloped contour that frames your teeth harmoniously while maintaining proper proportions to your facial features.

At Prostho Endo Dental Specialists, we prioritize your comfort throughout the gum contouring procedure. Most patients are pleasantly surprised by how comfortable the experience is, particularly with our advanced laser technology. Before beginning treatment, we ensure complete numbness using precise local anesthetic techniques.
For anxious patients, we offer additional options including nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and conscious sedation to create a relaxed experience. During the procedure, our laser technology precisely reshapes your gumline with significantly less trauma than traditional surgical approaches.
The laser simultaneously seals blood vessels as it works, dramatically reducing bleeding and post-procedure discomfort. Throughout your treatment, you can enjoy our comfort amenities including noise-cancelling headphones with music, aromatherapy, and warm blankets.
Most patients report minimal discomfort after laser gum contouring, typically managed with over-the-counter pain relievers for the first day if needed. Recovery is remarkably quick, with most patients returning to normal activities the very next day. Any sensitivity usually resolves within a few days as your gums heal.
We provide detailed aftercare instructions and follow up personally to ensure your comfort throughout the healing process.

Recovery after laser gum contouring is typically quick and comfortable compared to traditional surgical approaches. Most patients experience minimal downtime, with initial healing occurring within 24-48 hours.
During this initial period, your gums may feel slightly tender or sensitive, but this discomfort is usually mild and easily managed with over-the-counter pain relievers if needed. We recommend a soft food diet for the first 24 hours and provide specific oral hygiene instructions to promote optimal healing without irritating the treated areas. You can generally return to most normal activities the day after your procedure, though we advise avoiding vigorous exercise for 2-3 days.
Complete gum healing progresses rapidly, with final tissue maturation occurring over about two weeks. Throughout this time, the appearance of your gumline continues to improve as any minor swelling resolves and the tissues fully heal.
Our laser technology significantly accelerates this healing process compared to traditional scalpel techniques by sealing blood vessels and minimizing tissue trauma during the procedure. We schedule a follow-up appointment approximately one week after your contouring to monitor your healing progress and address any questions or concerns.
Most patients are able to fully enjoy their enhanced smile appearance immediately, with results continuing to refine as healing completes.

When performed properly by a specialist like Dr. Shin, the results of gum contouring are permanent, and the tissue will not grow back to its previous position.
This is because we're permanently recontouring the gum architecture rather than simply removing inflamed tissue. However, it's important to understand certain distinctions regarding gum tissue behavior. The gum contouring we perform for cosmetic enhancement or crown lengthening involves reshaping the healthy gum margin and sometimes the underlying bone structure to create ideal tooth proportions and symmetry.
This structural change is permanent and stable over time with proper oral hygiene. If your original concern was a “gummy smile” caused by altered passive eruption (where the gums didn't recede properly as your teeth erupted), our treatment corrects this developmental issue once and for all.
It's worth noting that some patients confuse cosmetic gum contouring with procedures to address gum inflammation or overgrowth related to poor oral hygiene, certain medications, or hormonal changes.
In those cases, treating the underlying cause is essential for maintaining results. During your consultation, Dr. Shin will explain the specific nature of your gum concerns and provide a clear understanding of the expected longevity of your results. Most patients enjoy their enhanced smile aesthetics for a lifetime with proper dental care.

The investment in gum contouring varies depending on several factors, including the extent of treatment needed, whether it involves a single tooth or your entire smile, the complexity of your case, and whether additional procedures like crown lengthening (involving bone recontouring) are required.
At Prostho Endo Dental Specialists, we're committed to transparency in pricing and will provide a detailed breakdown of costs during your consultation after Dr. Shin has assessed your specific needs. Simple laser contouring for one or two teeth is typically more affordable than comprehensive smile recontouring.
While dental insurance generally provides limited coverage for cosmetic procedures, gum contouring may receive partial coverage if it's performed for functional reasons or in conjunction with necessary restorative work.
We offer multiple financing options through TuaPay, Cherry, Lending Club, and CareCredit, many with interest-free payment plans that make enhancing your smile more accessible. Our in-house membership program (Essential Smile Plan) also provides discounts on certain cosmetic treatments for patients without insurance.
Given the permanent nature of gum contouring and its significant impact on your smile's appearance, many patients find it to be a high-value investment that enhances both their smile aesthetics and confidence. During your consultation, our team will discuss all financial aspects clearly and help you find the most manageable way to achieve your desired smile enhancements.
