Single-Tooth Dental Implant
Why Single-Tooth Implants is The Best Replacement Option
That gap affects how you speak, how you eat, and even changes the dynamics of your entire mouth as neighboring teeth gradually shift into the open space.
What's less visible, but equally concerning is the bone loss that begins immediately after tooth extraction, potentially compromising your facial structure over time.

At Prostho Cosmetic Dentistry, our single-tooth implants address all these concerns by replacing not just the visible crown but also the tooth root. This titanium post integrates with your jawbone through a natural process called osseointegration, stimulating bone preservation just like a natural root while providing an incredibly stable foundation for your custom-crafted crown. The result is a replacement tooth so natural that you'll likely forget which tooth was replaced.
Dr. Shin's advanced prosthodontic training and precision-guided implant placement techniques ensure optimal positioning for both aesthetics and function. Using 3D imaging and custom surgical guides, he places implants with minimally invasive techniques that significantly reduce recovery time and post-procedure discomfort.
Want to replace your missing tooth with the gold standard in dental restoration?
Schedule your implant consultation today to discover if you're a candidate for this life-changing procedure.
At Prostho Cosmetic Dentistry, our implant procedures combine Dr. Shin's specialized prosthodontic expertise with advanced 3D-guided placement technology.
Unlike general dentists who might outsource implant surgery, Dr. Shin's comprehensive training enables him to handle both the surgical placement and aesthetic restoration, ensuring seamless coordination throughout your treatment for superior functional and aesthetic outcomes.
Our precision approach extends beyond the procedure itself to include detailed pre-operative planning with CBCT imaging and custom surgical guides that ensure optimal implant positioning.
This technology-driven methodology significantly reduces recovery time while maximizing long-term success rates.
We further enhance your experience with our in-house dental lab capabilities, allowing for custom shade matching and precise adjustments that create truly indistinguishable restorations that complement your unique facial features and existing dentition—creating replacement teeth so natural that even you may forget which tooth was replaced.

Frequently Asked Questions About Single-Tooth Dental Implants
A single-tooth dental implant offers a complete structural replacement by using a titanium post surgically placed into your jawbone to replace the missing root, topped with a custom crown that replaces the visible portion of your tooth. Unlike bridges that require grinding down adjacent healthy teeth for support or removable partial dentures that rest on your gums, dental implants are completely self-supporting and integrated with your body.
This integration stimulates natural bone preservation through a process called osseointegration, preventing the jawbone deterioration that typically occurs after tooth loss.
At Prostho Cosmetic Dentistry, Dr. Shin's prosthodontic expertise ensures your implant is precisely positioned for optimal function and aesthetics, creating a replacement that looks, feels, and functions just like your natural tooth. Curious about whether an implant is the right solution for your missing tooth?
Contact us for a comprehensive evaluation of your specific situation.
Your dental implant journey is about to begin, and we want to make sure you’re prepared! After your procedure, you may have some soreness or tenderness in the treated area, but nothing that over-the-counter pain relievers can’t handle.
For the first 24-48 hours, stick to soft foods like smoothies, soups, and eggs to avoid putting too much pressure on the implant. If you ever notice the implant area feeling loose or painful, please contact us right away so we can take a look.
We’re here to support you every step of the way. See you soon!
Do not spit, rinse, suck (using a straw), drink carbonated or alcoholic beverages, or smoke for at least 24 hours following your procedure. Passively empty your mouth while needed by standing over the sink and drooling everything out slowly.
Bed Rest: Plan to rest for the remainder of the day with your head elevated about 30 degrees. Advance activity the next day but please take it easy since too much activity can cause swelling.
Oral Hygiene: Brush gently. A gentle lukewarm saltwater rinse can be used to freshen your mouth. But again, do not spit; just let the fluid passively empty. The corners of your mouth may become cracked and dry so moisturize frequently. If you have partials/dentures, please leave them out unless directed otherwise.
Swelling and Discomfort: Apply cold compresses to affected area at 10-minute intervals for the first 24 hours to minimize swelling. Any swelling that occurs usually begins to go away within 72 hours. Please give us a call if there is no change.
Ibuprofen (Advil®, Motrin®) works well to manage post-operative discomfort. In case of pain, adopt a regular dosing schedule of 400 – 600mg every 6-8 hours for 24 hours. If pain is not controlled with Ibuprofen only, you can combine/stagger Ibuprofen 600mg with 500mg of Acetaminophen (Extra Strength Tylenol®). Please do not use any of the above medications that your physician or pharmacist has advised you not to take. Please follow manufacturer’s instructions and discontinue alcohol consumption while taking these medications.
Bleeding: Some oozing of blood is normal for the first 12-24 hours. Put a hand towel on your pillow as some drooling can occur while you are numb. If you experience excessive bleeding, apply firm pressure with 1-2 folded gauze pads or a damp tea bag on the affected area for about 30-60 minutes and keep your head elevated. Call the office if the bleeding does not subside.
During office hours (8:30am-5:00pm, M-F), please call/text: 301-377-8306
After hours, please call/text Dr. DJ Shin’s cell phone: 857-540-2066
Diet: Drink plenty of fluids. A soft diet will be the easiest (yogurt, milkshakes with no straw, soups, fish, and pasta). Nothing too spicy is recommended. It is normal to have a little tenderness while chewing and difficulty opening wide. Do not chew hard food in the area of your implant until the healing process is completed (2-6 months).
Stitches: If you have received sutures, avoid playing with them. If non-restorable sutures were placed, a 15-minute post op appointment will be needed to remove the sutures in 7-10 days.
Prescriptions: If you have been prescribed antibiotics, take as directed until they run out, even if the symptoms dissipate. Some antibiotics can interfere with the effectiveness of other medications so let your dentist know of any other medications you may be taking. Take all medications as directed by your dentist.
Post-Operative Implant Hygiene: The first year following the placement of your implant, professional hygiene maintenance is required every 3-6 months, as directed by your dentist.
Please return for a follow-up. Failure to do so may result in complications and Prostho. Endo. Dental Specialists (Shin Prosthodontics, LLC) will not be held liable for conditions or problems that may occur due to your failure to return for follow-up.
Most adults with good general health are excellent candidates for dental implants, though several factors can influence your candidacy. Adequate jawbone density and volume are essential for supporting the implant, though we offer bone grafting solutions for patients with insufficient bone.
Good oral health, including healthy gums without active periodontal disease, creates the optimal environment for implant success. Certain medical conditions like uncontrolled diabetes or medications that affect bone healing may require special consideration, as might smoking habits, which can significantly impair the healing process.
At Prostho Cosmetic Dentistry, our comprehensive evaluation includes detailed 3D imaging of your bone structure, assessment of your medical history, and thorough oral examination to determine your implant candidacy.
We've successfully helped many patients who were previously told they weren't candidates for implants through specialized techniques and preparatory treatments.

At Prostho Cosmetic Dentistry, our patients are frequently surprised by how comfortable the implant procedure actually is. The implant placement itself is performed under local anesthesia, ensuring you feel no pain during the procedure. For anxious patients, we offer additional comfort options including nitrous oxide and oral sedation.
Most patients report that implant placement is less uncomfortable than tooth extraction, with minimal post-operative discomfort typically managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. The recovery follows a predictable pattern: some minor swelling and tenderness for 2-3 days, followed by rapid improvement.
Most patients return to work and normal activities the day after surgery, though we recommend avoiding strenuous exercise for about a week. Our minimally invasive techniques, precise placement, and advanced instrumentation significantly reduce tissue trauma and accelerate healing.
Throughout your recovery, our team remains available to address any concerns and ensure your comfort. Still concerned about potential discomfort?

The complete single-tooth implant process typically takes 3-6 months from initial consultation to final crown placement, though this timeline can vary based on your specific situation. After your initial consultation and planning (1-2 weeks), the implant placement procedure itself takes about 60-90 minutes.
The most significant timeframe involves the osseointegration period approximately 3-4 months for the lower jaw and 4-6 months for the upper jaw during which the implant fuses with your bone.
Once integration is complete, the final crown process takes about 2-3 weeks, including impressions, fabrication, and placement. For patients requiring preliminary procedures like tooth extraction or bone grafting, additional healing time (typically 3-4 months) may be needed before implant placement.
At Prostho Cosmetic Dentistry, we can often provide temporary aesthetic solutions during the treatment timeline so you're never without a tooth. Need your implant completed by a specific date?
