Root Canal Therapy
Why Is Root Canal Therapy So Important?
Root canal therapy represents the critical difference between saving your natural tooth and requiring extraction. When the tooth pulp (the inner tissue containing nerves and blood vessels) becomes infected or damaged due to deep decay, trauma, cracks, or repeated dental procedures, root canal therapy provides the only way to eliminate infection while preserving your tooth.

Without treatment, infection progresses causing intensifying pain, abscess formation, and potential spread to surrounding tissues—a situation that can become life-threatening.
As an endodontist with specialized training two years beyond general dentistry, Dr. Ana Kim brings exceptional expertise to this sophisticated procedure. Using the Zeiss Extaro 300 microscope for enhanced visualization and GentleWave® technology for superior cleaning, she provides treatment that's both more effective and remarkably comfortable compared to traditional approaches.
Modern root canal therapy bears little resemblance to outdated perceptions. Most patients are surprised to discover the procedure typically relieves pain rather than causing it. Dr. Kim's gentle technique and advanced technology create a comfortable experience that patients frequently describe as no more difficult than receiving a filling.
Beyond immediate pain relief, successful root canal therapy preserves your natural tooth structure, maintains proper chewing function and bite alignment, prevents neighboring teeth from shifting, and avoids the more complex and costly procedures associated with tooth loss.
This preservation of your natural dentition represents a significant long-term benefit for both your oral health and overall wellbeing.

Throughout your treatment, our focus on both clinical excellence and patient comfort includes same-day emergency appointments, multiple sedation options, and comfort amenities like Netflix and noise-canceling headphones that transform what many fear into a surprisingly comfortable experience with exceptional success rates that save teeth other practitioners might deem hopeless.

Frequently Asked Questions About Root Canal Therapy
One of the most persistent myths about dentistry is that root canal therapy is extremely painful. In reality, modern root canal treatment with an endodontic specialist like Dr. Kim is focused on relieving pain, not causing it.
Most patients are surprised by how comfortable the experience is, often comparing it to receiving a routine filling. Before beginning treatment, we ensure complete numbness using precise anesthetic techniques specifically targeted for infected teeth. For anxious patients, we offer additional comfort options including nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and conscious sedation to create a relaxed experience.
Our advanced technology, including the GentleWave® system, allows for more thorough cleaning with less instrumentation, significantly reducing post-procedure discomfort compared to traditional methods. During the procedure, you can enjoy our comfort amenities including Netflix streaming, noise-cancelling headphones with music, aromatherapy, and warm blankets. Most patients experience immediate relief from the severe pain that prompted treatment in the first place.
Any mild discomfort following the procedure typically responds well to over-the-counter pain relievers and resolves within a few days. We provide detailed post-procedure instructions and follow up personally to ensure your comfort throughout the healing process.

Pre-OP Instructions for Root Canal Treatment or Retreatment

Please follow these guidelines in preparation for your visit:
- Eat breakfast or lunch before your appointment to ensure a normal blood glucose level. Do not drink caffeinated drinks, like regular coffee.
- Take your routine medications, including aspirin therapy, if applicable. However, do not take medication for discomfort (i.e., ibuprofen, Advil, Motrin, Aleve, etc.) prior to the first visit because it may mask symptoms and hinder diagnosis.
- If you require prophylactic antibiotics before dental visits for a prosthetic heart valve or orthopedic prosthesis (artificial hip, knee, elbow, etc.), please call our office for instructions.
- Our office hours are 8:00am-5:00pm on Monday-Friday. Occasionally, last minute emergency patients can delay our schedule, so please allow a little extra time for your appointment. We value your time and will try to keep you updated when delays occur.
- All patients under the age of 18 must be accompanied on each visit by their parent or legal guardian.
We look forward to being of service to you. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call us at 301-377-8306 or e-mail: hello@prostho-endo.com.
Post-Op Instructions for Root Canal Treatment or Retreatment
1. Please eat carefully until the numbness wears off.
2. It is normal to feel tenderness in the treated area for the next few days. However, if you experience any swelling, fever, chills, or discomfort, such as a continuing dull ache, or need to use medication for discomfort for more than 48 hours after treatment, please call our office during or after the regular office hours.
If your call is not picked up, please leave a voice message, or you can send a text message to the same phone number. If the call back is not received within one hour, please call again. Before calling, please have your pharmacy information available in case the doctor needs to call in a prescription.
3. Unless contraindicated by a medical condition, Ibuprofen (Advil®, Motrin®) is the drug of choice for management of discomfort after endodontic treatment. Try to adopt a regular dosing schedule. Acetaminophen (Tylenol®) or Aspirin (Bayer®) can be used instead of Ibuprofen but will not work as well. In general, a combination of ibuprofen and acetaminophen works the best, better than any prescribed analgesics, to manage post-operative discomfort. Do not use any of the above medications that your physician or pharmacist has advised you not to take. Please follow manufacturer’s instructions and discontinue alcohol consumption while taking these medications.
General Guideline:
Take 400 mg (two of 200 mg capsules) of Ibuprofen every 8 hours for up to 48 hrs.
If needed, take 500 mg of Acetaminophen (Extra-strength Tylenol®) every 8 hours with or in-between Ibuprofen.
If you cannot take Ibuprofen and/or Tylenol, please consult with your primary physician.
If you are given a prescription for antibiotics, follow instructions on the prescription bottle.
Please note that the current maximum daily dosage is 1,200mg (6 of 200mg capsules) for over-the-counter Ibuprofen and 3,000 mg (6 of 500 mg capsules) for Acetaminophen.
Please be aware that some commonly prescribed pain medications (e.g. Vicodin®, Norco®, Oxycodone®) contain Acetaminophen and you should NOT combine them with over-the-counter Acetaminophen.
Take all above medications with food, and IMMEDIATELY STOP USING ANY DRUG THAT CAUSES STOMACH UPSET OR ALLERGIC REACTIONS (including hives, rash, facial swelling, asthma, or wheezing). Seek immediate medical attention if any complications arise.
4. Take all of your routine medications according to instructions.
5. Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until your restorative dentist has placed a permanent restoration. You can brush and floss as usual.
6. We will send a record of your treatment including radiographs to your general dentist. You must visit your general dentist in about two weeks to place a final restoration.
7. Any condition can change. Some diseases worsen despite proper treatment. Some problems begin with unusual or vague symptoms and may require passage of time for symptoms and findings to develop before the correct diagnosis can be made. Please call us if your condition worsens in any way.
We hope that your experience with us was seamless and comfortable. Please remember to leave us a review and feedback and help other people like you find an endodontist whose top priority is their comfort and providing the highest level of quality care.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to us with any questions or concerns. We’re just a phone call away. Thank you.
At Prostho Endo Dental Specialists, most root canal procedures are completed in a single appointment lasting approximately 60-90 minutes, though this varies depending on the complexity of your case and the tooth being treated. Front teeth with single canals may require as little as 45 minutes, while molars with multiple canals typically take longer.
Our use of advanced technology like the GentleWave® system often allows us to complete treatment more efficiently than traditional methods while achieving superior cleaning results. During your initial consultation, Dr. Kim will provide a personalized time estimate based on your specific situation.
For particularly complex cases, including teeth with unusual anatomy, calcified canals, or previous unsuccessful root canal treatment, we occasionally schedule a second appointment to ensure optimal results.
For emergency patients in severe pain, we prioritize same-day relief, even if that means beginning treatment immediately and completing the final steps at a subsequent visit. The investment of time in expert root canal therapy yields significant returns—saving your natural tooth, eliminating infection and pain, and avoiding the more time-consuming and costly procedures associated with tooth extraction and replacement.
Throughout your appointment, our focus on both clinical efficiency and patient comfort ensures your time with us is well-spent and as pleasant as possible.

Root canal therapy performed by an endodontist like Dr. Kim has an exceptionally high success rate of approximately 95-97%, with most treated teeth lasting a lifetime with proper restoration and maintenance. This success rate significantly exceeds that of general dentists performing the same procedure due to specialized training, experience with complex cases, and advanced technology like our microscope and GentleWave® system.
Several factors influence the success of your specific treatment, including the extent of infection, tooth anatomy, timing of treatment, and quality of the final restoration.
Teeth treated at earlier stages of infection typically have better outcomes than those with extensive damage or long-standing infection. Similarly, receiving a proper crown or restoration promptly after root canal therapy significantly impacts long-term success by preventing fracture and decontamination.
During your consultation, Dr. Kim will discuss any factors specific to your case that might affect the prognosis. In the rare instance that a root canal-treated tooth develops new problems years later, endodontic retreatment or apicoectomy (root-end surgery) can often save the tooth again.
Our ongoing research and implementation of advanced techniques continue to improve success rates even for teeth previously considered untreatable. With proper care, including regular dental check-ups and good oral hygiene, your treated tooth can provide natural function and aesthetics for decades or even a lifetime.

Declining recommended root canal therapy has significant consequences that extend beyond the affected tooth. The infection that prompted the recommendation doesn't resolve on its own it progresses, causing intensifying pain, abscess formation, and bone loss around the tooth roots.
As bacteria multiply, infection can spread to surrounding tissues, potentially creating serious health risks including cellulitis, sinusitis, or even systemic infection that may require hospitalization in severe cases. Eventually, the advancing infection destroys the tooth's supporting structures, necessitating extraction. While antibiotics may temporarily relieve symptoms by suppressing bacteria, they cannot reach the internal tooth tissues where the infection originates, making them an ineffective long-term solution.
Following extraction, adjacent teeth begin drifting into the empty space, disrupting your bite alignment and potentially causing issues with chewing efficiency, jaw joint function, and even appearance.
Replacing the extracted tooth with an implant, bridge, or partial denture involves more extensive procedures and significantly higher costs compared to preserving your natural tooth through root canal therapy.
These replacement options, while excellent, still don't fully replicate the function and feel of your natural tooth. Dr. Kim always recommends the most conservative approach to preserve your natural dentition whenever possible, as this typically provides the best long-term outcomes for both oral health and overall well-being.
