At Prostho Cosmetic Dentistry in North Bethesda, Maryland and Vienna, Virginia, we provide high-quality dental fillings that restore teeth damaged by decay or injury. Our natural-looking restorations rebuild tooth structure while preventing further damage for a healthy, functional smile.

Why Dental Fillings Are Essential

Dental fillings repair damaged teeth, and stop decay
When tooth decay or damage occurs, prompt treatment is essential to prevent the problem from worsening and potentially leading to pain, infection, or even tooth loss. Dental fillings at Prostho Cosmetic Dentistry provide the ideal solution, restoring your tooth’s integrity while preserving as much natural structure as possible.

Our approach to fillings combines advanced materials with precision techniques to create restorations that both look natural and function properly. We exclusively use tooth-colored composite materials that bond directly to your tooth structure, strengthening the remaining tooth while blending seamlessly with your natural enamel.

This conservative approach requires less drilling than traditional methods, allowing us to preserve more of your healthy tooth structure.

The filling procedure is comfortable, efficient, and typically completed in just one visit. Using local anesthesia to ensure your comfort, we gently remove the decayed or damaged portion of your tooth, clean the area thoroughly, and precisely place the restorative material.

After shaping and polishing your filling to match your natural tooth contours, you’ll leave with a fully restored tooth that looks and feels completely natural.

Don’t let a small problem become a bigger one, schedule your appointment today to address decay or damage with a high-quality dental filling.

What Sets Our Dental Fillings Apart?

At Prostho Cosmetic Dentistry, our approach to dental fillings exemplifies our commitment to both aesthetic excellence and long-term dental health. We utilize advanced nano-hybrid composite materials that offer superior strength, wear resistance, and natural light reflection properties, ensuring restorations that truly disappear in your smile while providing exceptional durability even in high-stress areas of your mouth.

Our technique distinguishes our fillings through meticulous attention to detail at every step of the process. We begin with precise, minimal tooth preparation that preserves maximum healthy structure while ensuring all compromised material is removed.

Our layering technique recreates the complex structure of natural teeth by using materials of varying opacities and translucencies, mimicking the way light interacts with natural enamel and dentin.

This artistic approach extends to our finishing process, where we carefully reproduce proper tooth anatomy including natural contours, grooves, and contact points that ensure both aesthetic appeal and optimal function. Each restoration receives a multi-step polishing protocol that creates a smooth, lustrous surface resistant to staining and plaque accumulation.

This comprehensive approach transforms a basic repair into an opportunity to enhance your tooth’s appearance and structural integrity, providing fillings that maintain their beauty and function for years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Fillings

Pre-OP Instructions for Dental Fillings

Getting a dental filling is a common and straightforward procedure that helps restore and protect your tooth. To ensure the process goes smoothly and comfortably, please review the following instructions before your appointment.

1. Medications

  • Continue taking any regular medications as prescribed unless instructed otherwise.
  • If you’ve been prescribed pre-medication antibiotics (typically for certain heart conditions or joint replacements), please take them 1 hour before your appointment.
  • Inform us if you are on any blood thinners or have a medical condition we should be aware of.

2. Eating and Drinking

  • You can eat a light meal before your appointment unless you are receiving oral or IV sedation.
  • If sedation is planned, do not eat or drink anything for 6–8 hours before your visit, and arrange for a driver to take you home.

3. Anesthesia

  • Most fillings are done with local anesthesia (numbing the area), and you’ll be awake and alert during the procedure.
  • The numbing effect may last a few hours afterward, so be careful not to bite your cheek, tongue, or lip.
  • If you’re anxious about treatment, let us know. Sedation options may be available.

4. Oral Hygiene

  • Brush and floss normally before your appointment.
  • Avoid mouthwash with alcohol right before the visit, especially if sedation is planned.

5. Additional Tips

Allow yourself enough time after the appointment in case your mouth feels numb or sore.

You have just had a new filling. This is what you may feel:

  • Hot Sensitivity that may last a few days
  • Cold sensitivity that may last up to 8 weeks, but gradually decreasing in pain during that time period. Sensitivity to chewing that may last up to 8 weeks, but gradually decreasing in pain during that time period.
  • After the numbing wears off, you may feel you are not biting correctly. Please call soyour bite can be adjusted. You may not feel this for some time if the bite is only slightly high. Remember, when you are numb it is hard for you to judge if you are biting your teeth together correctly.

Any filling no matter what the size or depth may result in the need of a root canal. The symptoms you look for include:

  • Hot sensitivity that lasts longer than a few weeks
  • Hot sensitivity that begins after the tooth has been asymptomatic or problem free for a period of time. Spontaneous pain that occurs anytime during the day or night
  • Swelling, either in the mouth or on the face
  • Cold sensitivity that lingers on for many minutes. Sharp instantaneous reaction to cold is probably not a root canal symptom.

This is the same for children except a pulpotomy (baby root canal) is performed.

Any time a filling is placed there is less natural tooth. With less natural tooth the tooth is weaker. The filling material is not as strong as natural tooth therefore is in a weaker state. If your tooth breaks a new filling may be put in if not too large, however if it is very large a crown will be recommended to protect the remaining tooth.

Further, once the permanent restoration is placed, you must present for a follow up appointment no longer than 4 months to ensure you are able to keep your new restoration free of debris and your gums in healthy condition.

Not all cavities cause pain or visible damage, which is why regular dental check-ups are essential for early detection.

At Prostho Cosmetic Dentistry, we identify cavities through comprehensive examination using several methods: visual inspection may reveal discoloration, pitting, or obvious holes in teeth; gentle probing with specialized instruments can detect softened enamel that indicates decay; digital X-rays reveal cavities between teeth and below the enamel surface that aren’t visible to the naked eye; and advanced cavity detection technology like DIAGNOdent can identify decay at its earliest stages before significant damage occurs.

Common symptoms that might indicate you need a filling include: tooth sensitivity to sweet, hot or cold stimuli; discomfort when biting or chewing; visible holes or pits in your teeth; dark spots on tooth surfaces; or food frequently getting caught in a particular area.

Early detection allows us to treat cavities when they’re small, preserving more of your natural tooth structure and preventing the progression to more serious conditions requiring root canal therapy or extraction. This conservative approach saves both tooth structure and unnecessary expense.

If you’re experiencing any symptoms or it’s been more than six months since your last check-up, contact us to schedule an examination.

At Prostho Cosmetic Dentistry, we primarily use composite resin (tooth-colored) fillings for most restorations due to their excellent combination of aesthetics, durability, and conservative nature.

These materials bond directly to tooth structure, require less drilling than traditional options, and create virtually invisible restorations that match your natural teeth. For certain situations where exceptional strength is needed, particularly for large restorations in back teeth subject to heavy chewing forces, we may recommend porcelain inlays or onlays.

These laboratory-fabricated restorations offer superior durability and wear resistance while maintaining a natural appearance, though they require two appointments to complete. While we maintain the technical expertise to place traditional amalgam (silver) fillings if specifically requested, we generally recommend composite materials due to their numerous advantages, including preservation of more tooth structure and elimination of concerns about mercury content in amalgam.

The “best” material varies by individual situation, considering factors like the location of the cavity, size of the restoration needed, chewing forces in the area, and your personal preferences regarding aesthetics and materials.

During your consultation, we’ll discuss the options most appropriate for your specific case, considering both clinical requirements and your priorities.

Dental fillings at Prostho Cosmetic Dentistry are designed for long-term function, with composite (tooth-colored) fillings typically lasting 5-10 years, though many last significantly longer with proper care.

Several factors influence longevity: the size and location of the filling affects durability, with smaller fillings and those outside heavy chewing areas often lasting 10+ years; your oral hygiene habits directly impact restoration lifespan, as excellent care prevents decay around filling margins; dietary choices including consumption of hard foods and excessive acidic substances can accelerate wear; and whether you have grinding or clenching habits that place additional stress on restorations.

We carefully monitor your fillings during regular check-ups, looking for signs that might indicate replacement is needed: visible wear or chipping; roughness you can feel with your tongue; catching or tearing of dental floss around the filling edges; new decay developing around the filling margins; or sensitivity in the filled tooth. Replacing fillings at the first signs of deterioration often allows for another conservative restoration, while waiting until significant problems develop may necessitate more extensive treatment like crowns.

With appropriate home care, regular professional maintenance, and prompt attention to any issues, your fillings can provide reliable function for many years.

Not all cavities cause pain or visible damage, which is why regular dental check-ups are essential for early detection.

The dental filling procedure at Prostho Cosmetic Dentistry is designed for maximum comfort and efficiency. Most patients are pleasantly surprised by how painless modern filling procedures have become thanks to our gentle anesthetic techniques, including topical numbing gel before injection and precisely controlled delivery systems that minimize discomfort.

For anxious patients, we offer additional comfort options like nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to create a relaxed experience. The procedure length varies based on several factors: the size and location of the cavity affects treatment time, with small, easily accessible fillings taking as little as 20-30 minutes; multiple fillings in the same area of the mouth can often be completed in a single session lasting 45-60 minutes for efficiency; and the complexity of the restoration, with larger fillings requiring more time for proper placement and finishing.

After the procedure, the local anesthetic typically wears off within 1-3 hours. Most patients experience little to no discomfort afterward, though some temporary sensitivity to temperature or pressure is normal, particularly with deeper fillings. This sensitivity generally resolves within a few days and can be easily managed with over-the-counter pain relievers if needed.

The vast majority of patients return immediately to their normal activities with no downtime required. Still concerned about comfort during your filling appointment? Contact us to discuss our comfort-focused approach to restorative care.
